Student Studio Spaces
The Modlin Center for the Arts is home to a variety of well-equipped, state-of-the-art spaces for students to learn, practice, and perform. From rehearsal rooms to collaborative spaces to labs, students have access to inspiring spaces to support their experience at the University of Richmond. The Department of Art and Art History offers students 15 studios and lab spaces totaling approximately 70,000 square feet of space to support student work in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and sound, video, and new media.
The Department of Music features a Music Technology Lab, piano lab, harp studio, choir room, and practice rooms. The Global Music Studio, located in North Court, features an extensive collection of Balinese and Javanese Gamelan instruments and African drums. The University of Richmond is home to Gamelan Raga Kusama and River City Taiko, both of which are led by University faculty and involve a mixture of students and local community members. Private music lessons, music instrument lockers, and rentals are available for student use in the Booker Hall of Music.
The Department of Theatre and Dance offers students several fully equipped dance studios (Frederick Rehearsal Hall, Dance Studio Theatre, Booker Dance-Movement Studio), Design Lab, Acting/Directing Studio, a newly designed light technology lab (Gardner Room), Costume Shop, Prop Shop, and the William H. All UR students may use Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center and the recently renovated Parsons Music Library. Students have access to more than 14,000 works on paper from the 15th century to the present from around the world in the in the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center (request appointment). Located in the Booker Hall of Music, the Parsons Music Library includes a large study area, over 13,000 CDs, 18,000 scores, and 12,000 books about music and dance. The library also includes an extensive DVD collection of operas, musicals, dance performances, concerts, and instructional programs.
