Canceled - Manual Cinema Workshop: A Class in Cinematic Shadow Puppetry

March 21, 2020, 2:30 PM

At the Modlin Center for the Arts, the health and safety of our patrons, artists, students, faculty, and staff are top priority. In conjunction with the University of Richmond and in conformance with recommendations made by state and local governments, the Modlin Center has announced the cancellation of all performances through March 30, 2020.

The Modlin Center box office windows will be closed through March 30 but staff will be answering email and voicemail messages. We ask for your continued patience as we navigate this evolving situation.

Performers from Chicago collective Manual Cinema, a theatrical powerhouse reimagining puppetry by blending techniques from animation and film, will offer a free shadow puppetry workshop. No experience needed, and adults and children ages 13 and up are welcome.

Space is limited to 24 participants, and registration is required for the hands-on participatory component. Observers are welcome and no registration necessary.

Alice Jepson Theatre, UR Modlin Center for the Arts (453 Westhampton Way)

In this two-hour interactive workshop Manual Cinema performers share the techniques they use to create “live cinema” shows, from story ideas to full production. Participants will have an opportunity to work directly behind the screens (in silhouette) and with the overhead projectors and puppets to create narrative pieces in small groups. The workshop finishes with sharing your brand-new, original story to the larger group for discussion.

The company performs “Frankenstein” at Modlin Center on March 21 at 7:30pm. Workshop participants will receive a promo code for a pair of complimentary tickets. Tickets and information at: modlin.richmond.edu.
