In the voice of their island homes, eight Indigenous musicians from across the Pacific and Indian Oceans come together for a concert that celebrates their heritage and calls attention to a region on the frontline of the climate crisis. Small Island Big Song features a multimedia collaboration that combines music, spoken word, dance, and film footage from the nations of Taiwan, Australia, Madagascar, Tahiti, Mauritius, Marshall Islands, and Papua New Guinea. In the spirit of storytelling before current borders were drawn, this performance is an oceanic songline, a timely and uplifting musical statement for environmental and cultural awareness.

Small Island Big Song evolved from a three-year film trip across 16 island nations by Australian filmmaker and music producer Tim Cole and Taiwanese film producer BaoBao Chen. They worked with more than 100 artists, elders, community groups, and grassroots musicians. The result is a stunning collaboration reuniting the distant yet interconnected musical traditions of the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Presented as part of University of Richmond's One Book, One Richmond programming.
