We All Break lives at the crossroads of traditional Haitian Vodou music, jazz composition, and improvisation. They are joined by musician and composer Leyla McCalla, whose recent work explores the rhythms and stories of her own Haitian heritage. With a focus on collaboration and experimentation, We All Break creates a dynamic and engaging live experience which celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Haiti while pushing the boundaries of contemporary music.
The brainchild of New York drummer, percussionist, and composer Ches Smith, We All Break features a diverse lineup of musicians who bring their own unique styles and influences to the mix. Their collaborative process on the album Path of Seven Colors is showcased in the award-winning documentary of the same name.
Leyla McCalla is a Haitian-American musician and singer-songwriter based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Known for her unique blend of folk, blues, and traditional Haitian music, McCalla is also a cellist and has released several albums, including Vari-Colored Songs and A Day for the Hunter, A Day for the Prey. McCalla is in her second year at UR as Artist in Residence, working with students and faculty of the Department of Music.
