“The evening’s revelation was Sankofa’s La Ciudad de los Otros (The City of Others), an episodic work about urban struggle and resilience combining elements of hip-hop and Afro-Colombian dance.”  —New York Times

Exploring the racial undercurrents of Colombia, a country home to Latin America's second largest population of people of African descent, Sankofa Danzafro’s La Ciudad de los Otros(The City of Others) reaches deep into the experiences of their community to create a vibrant new work of dance theatre. The intersection of capoeira, Latin and African dance, hip-hop, live drumming and singing tell the powerful story young Afro-Colombians who are struggling to combat Colombia’s historical legacy of slavery and racism. The work confronts the reality of marginalized communities marked by ethnic discrimination and social inequality for generations. The City of Others demands the city be a place of coexistence; a place for everybody, not only the few.

In connection with Black History Month, Rafael Palacios, artistic director of Sankofa Danzafro, and Alicia Díaz, associate professor of dance, will host a live, in-depth conversation following the performance.
