“When I finally started getting together occasionally with folks for outdoor jam sessions,” says saxophonist Joshua Redman of his pandemic experience, “the approach was predictably casual: ‘Let’s just play some tunes.’ Naturally, a lot of the tunes that were called were ones written by Duke, Monk, or Wayne.” That’s the origin story of Redman’s new project, 3x3, which is centered on music by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Wayne Shorter performed in the classic trio format of saxophone, bass, and drums. For Redman, these luminaries are “not just relevant but foundational,” and as a leading light in today’s jazz, Redman builds beautifully on that foundation.
Listen to one of Redman's compositions Undertow, from the 2020 release Round Again, recorded with members of the original Joshua Redman Quartet: Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade.
