CONTRA-TIEMPO, Full Still Hungry

Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.
Carpenter Theatre, Richmond CenterStage

“[CONTRA-TIEMPO] represents the kind of socially aware contemporary work that only a few dance artists such as Bill T. Jones reliably provide…in heart, mind, and soul this is the real thing” – The Los Angeles Times

CONTRA-TIEMPO fuses salsa, Afro-Cuban, West African, contemporary urban, and dance theater styles to create an invigorating blend of physically intense and socially astute performance.
Founded and directed by Ana Maria Alvarez, the Los Angeles-based CONTRA-TIEMPO is a non-profit, activist dance company that is dedicated to transforming the world through dance. Their unique Urban Latin Dance Theater brings to life voices that are not traditionally heard on the concert stage.
In the words of Ana Maria Alvarez, Full Still Hungry brings to life the complexities of food as a “not just the material I put in my body to sustain life - but a web of relationships, histories, choices, decisions that all impact the world around us.” These relationships are brought to life through the company’s evocative and electric movement approach with live, original music composed by resident composer Cesar Alvarez.
This performance is part of a full-week residency that includes free salsa workshops for the public, in-school workshops at Patrick Henry High School, and the premiere of a new work by students at Patrick Henry High School.
