Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music

The University of Richmond presents an evening of South and Southeast Asian performance featuring Thai, Javanese, Balinese and Indian music. Guests include Javanese musicians from the Indonesian embassy and musicians from Richmond's Gandharva School of Music led by Nirmal Bajekal. This short concert will be followed by an on stage hands-on workshop on the enormous Balinese gamelan orchestra: a traditional set of gongs, chimes, cymbals and drums housed in intricately carved wooden cases.

Gamelan Raga Kusuma was founded in February 2007 and is made up of a diverse group of students and community members. The orchestra was hand-forged over six months by Bali's foremost gongsmith in 2005. During the fall 2007 semester, with support from the University of Richmond Office of International Education, the group was directed by visiting master artist Gusti Putu Sudarta, who sanctified and named the ensemble.

Join the ensemble at this performance to help us celebrate our first birthday!

This event is kid friendly and free!

Gamelan rehearsals are free and open to the public. Thursday evenings 7-9 pm, Room BB117, Booker Hall of Music, University of Richmond.
