Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music

The explosive growth in the popularity of world music during the past several decades has broadened the boundaries of the world, reminding listeners of the vast cultural wealth and diversity in this wired age. The music of African-born songstress Angélique Kidjo offers another perspective: that the world is also much smaller than we think, and that no matter how far flung its peoples may be, subtle lines of interconnection span the globe, uniting its people. In the course of her successful career, Angélique Kidjo has spread her rhythmic Afro-funk fusion to the four corners of the globe, touring with artists such as Josh Groban. With her fun-loving personality, on-stage charisma and unique voice, Kidjo is one of the most popular artists on today’s world music scene.

I want to express my love of the concert. angelique Kidjo is such a good host, I had a marvelous evening!
One of the best concerts I ever went to!
I can't stand UofR as a venue. First, I couldn't find Modlin's side theater,t hen I had to run all the way back to the will call window in the other side of the building. then I had no idea where to park...

Loved loved the concert, well worth the money. thank you musicians and Angelique.

Really loved the show--it was an energetic way to end a great season. Can't wait to see next year's offerings. The Modlin does a great job of bringing talent to Richmond.

Best concert ever

Have been fans of Angelique for many years. We have super hifi and enjoyed great recordings of great songs and the infectious intellect of Ms Kidjo for many years. Tonight we got to know our heroine much better than we could have expected. A hard-to-warm-up crowd who didn't get out of their seats for the cover of the Stones' Gimme Shelter (at which point many an artist would have given up) was warmed by her personality and sheer energy. Now, Angelique has assembled a group of musicians easily worthy of sitting as quietly as possible in order to catch every nuance of every note (akin to a classical concert) which no doubt was a large part of the initial resilience of the audience to sing and dance. But Angelique knows well how to communicate and warm the hearts of her audience and the initial frigidity was rapidly thawed. Her musicians, to a man, demonstrated extraordinary facility with jamming, improvising and rhythm that is rarely encountered. Near the end she invites the audience to join her on stage, and our 8-yr-old daughter dances with her... how much better can it get. This is a person who gets the world and gets how to make it a better place. She gives her message inexpensively and honorably. We will be stunned by this performance - which might be considered cynically but incorrectly by the outside observer as another commercial product - for years to come.

On a whim, probably b/c my younger daughter is in Africa for 2-1/2 weeks with her work and I was thinking she is soooo far away and I'm missing her, and then reading that Angelique is African, I purchased a ticket. Not knowing what to expect, but noticing there were all age folks in audience, I experienced one of the most enjoyable concerts I've ever attended. Not only is this petite African lady a lady, she has obviously a never-ending enthusiasm for life, multi talents, a way to relate and reach her audience in a very genuine manner, and a message of hope and optimism to share. Initially, I was disappointed b/c I've been to one too many events in Richmond where the audience is predictably stone cold, poker-faced, non-energetic, non-responding, dull, snobby, acting as if they're too good or too Richmond to acknowledge there are talented and versatile people in this world outside their little comfort zones. HOWEVER, being the UNIQUE and true-to-herself individual she is, it was most refreshing and uplifting to see and experience her working her audience with her charisma and "help" them to gradually respond and eventually participate, and, hey, guess what, genuinely enjoy themselves. As Angelique said.....celebrate life, be happy, love, enjoy each moment, each hour, each day, tomorrow it may be too late! BRAVO!!! VIVA ANGELIQUE! I felt privileged to be there!

One of the best concerts we've seen in Richmond. We first heard Angelique Kidjo when we heard her song "Batonga" in Nanni Moretti's film "Caro diario" back in 1994, and immediately went out and bought Legozo, an album which still sounds as fresh today as it did then. We're so glad we finally got the chance to see her; and she lived up to her reputation for giving a high energy performance that gets everybody out of their seats. Hope the folks at the Modlin Center will continue to bring to Richmond artists of this caliber from the world music scene (how about Salif Keita or even Youssou N'Dour?!). Kudos!!

I've been a fan of Ms. Kidjo's for several years now, however this is the first opportunity I've had to see her live. What an awesome experience. Her voice sounded as pure as her recordings and the musicians that accompanied her were truly artists of their respective instruments.

A memorable show and a highlight.

"She's only been on the stage for 30 mins!!" that was my response when Angelique told the crowd that she was singing her last song of the night, then my friend kindly pointed to the fact that it was past 9pm and therefore Angelique had been on stage for at least 1h30mins. I was shocked where did the time go? It is one of the best performances that I have ever seen and it was one of those rare performances where the artist and the audience unite together and produce some magic! I have never seen people at any Modlin event get off their seats and dance and what was even shocking was that the whole auditorium was up on their feet!
I hope there will be more such acts at the Modlin the next season! Thank you for bringing her to Richmond, I think I speak for many when I say we hope to see more artist like her here again in the not too distant future.
