After a two-year world tour, conceptual artist, writer and musician DJ Spooky will bring his acclaimed multimedia performance piece Rebirth of a Nation to the Modlin Center. An audio and visual re-imagining of D.W. Griffith’s groundbreaking and polarizing 1915 classic The Birth of a Nation, the work combines DJ Spooky’s celebrated skills as a club DJ, multimedia storyteller and social critic to transform the silent-era epic into a mesmerizing commentary on political corruption and racism. Rebirth of a Nation has drawn acclaim around the world, from the Herod Atticus Theater at the base of the Acropolis in Greece to the London IMAX, Europe’s largest movie screen.

Paul Miller will conduct a 15-minute talk back session after the performance.

DJ Spooky was fabulous -- thought-provoking on so many levels:
artistically, historically and philosophically. Thoroughly engaging and
enlightening. The talk-back after the performance was also excellent.
A marvelous event.

Awesomely innovative, creative use of cinema and music. I loved what he did with the original movie "Birth of A Nation". The Q & A after the presentation was very intimate and personal. He really took time to answer our questions.

Rebirth of a Nation was superb. The piece is so well thought out, full of concept and exploration, and multi-layered. It's visually stunning, and it explores both media and the subject matter in innovative ways, resisting obvious and trite messages.

The performance posed so many questions in my mind, none of them simple, and it had the mark of my favorite kind of artwork: beauty and curiosity that draws you in, seducing the viewer to think and explore, to look at things differently. I especially enjoy DJ Spooky's approach of the viewer as participant.

The Q&A session was as important to the piece as the performance itself: much of the dialogue still has me thinking about the evolution of art and technology.

DJ Spooky REBIRTH OF A NATION was a fresh and exciting piece to witness, and a daring choice made by Modlin. It was not something I would have expected, and I am so very pleased that Modlin hosted this performance.
