featuring
Dawn Upshaw and Orquesta Los MarranosVisit Osvaldo Golijov on the Web
“It’s becoming clearer with every new piece that Golijov is fast becoming one of the most important composers for voice today—and that Upshaw is both his perfect muse and prophet.”
—Boston Herald Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music
The incomparable Dawn Upshaw sings the most recent major work—Ayre—from Osvaldo Golijov, the composer of La Pasion Segun San Marcus and Ainadamar, and winner of the 2003 MacArthur Award. Commissioned by Carnegie Hall at the request of Upshaw, Ayre—meaning "air" and "melody" in medieval Spanish—is a cycle of songs drawn primarily from a large body of 15th century Spanish folk songs. Representing the three prominent cultures in Spain at the time, the music is a lush mix of Spanish and Mediterranean influences and reflects a range of human conditions and emotions stemming from the cultural clash and mesh of the time. For this unique project, Dawn Upshaw is joined by hand-picked musicians (including members of eighth blackbird) united by a common passion for contemporary music and performance.

Hartke/Crumb/Ayre/eighth blackbirdPosted: February 22, 2008; 22:30
by: Rebecca Astounding concert! I was mesmerized. I'd remembered (sort of) the George Crumb piece from years ago. My father owned a recording. But I'd never heard the Hartke, the Golijov or witnessed Upshaw and eighth blackbird in performance.
Kudos to all who made this wonderful event possible! I purchased several CDs before I made my way home. Thank you!

by: Doc All three segments of the program were stellar. The "imaginary puppet plays" music of Hartke was fun and engaging, my first concert with eighth blackbird: no wonder they won the Grammy. Crumb's Vox Balaenae was haunting--big and grand made to evoke a deep compassion with a gentle giant. The instrumentation and the the shimmering blue lighting were stunningly beautiful. Golijov's Ayre, from its soft plaints to its lusty Moroccan pulses, was magnificent, a blending on many levels, not least of which were the interactions among Dawn Upshaw and the brilliant Orquesta, who brought astounding new sounds out of voice and traditional instruments.

by: Bob Of all the concerts my wife and I have attended at the Modlin Center, Ms. Upshaw's performance last night in "Ayre" stands out with that of Gil Shaham several years ago. Both performances were special gifts which, while ephemeral, will have a long lasting place in our memories. Performer and piece were a unity. Thank God we are alive to experience this bounty.

by: Margaret Having heard eighth blackbird and been blown away by them last fall, I was awaiting with much anticipation the combination of these phenomenal musical masters with the absolute greatest interpretive soprano of our time, Dawn Upshaw.
Not only did they meet my expectation, they transported me: to my childhood, to the bottom of the ocean, and then with Ms. Upshaw to visit many cultures and many private encounters around the world.
I'm sorry I could only afford two CD's, but please record the Hartke and Crumb so I can be transported at will.

by: Rebecca Having commented earlier, I'd just like to add that all the above comments eloquently elaborate on and reflect my own impressions of the performance.
Like Margaret, I would love to have the Hartke and Crumb, as interpreted by 8bb, on CD too.

by: Lance Absolutely stunning. It was our first time at the Modlin Center since moving to Virginia and we were as impressed with the theater as we were with the performances.
