"[Wang] can play powerfully...or with a feathery softness; she has a whole spectrum of hues in her fingers; and she goes beyond mere dexterity in her remarkable understanding, and her ability to avoid the obvious." —The Washington Post
Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music
Although only 20 years old, Yuja Wang is already internationally celebrated for her virtuosic performances at the piano. An artist whose innate sensitivities, intuitive understanding and keyboard prowess have earned her a formidable ranking among pianists of all ages, Wang is in high demand at concert venues throughout the world. Demonstrating an affinity for the piano at a young age, the six-year-old Yuja enrolled in the Central Conservatory of Music in her birthplace of Beijing. Soon after her enrollment, she was winning competitions in China, Spain and Germany. In 2005, she made her critically-acclaimed debut with the New York Philharmonic 2005, going on to appear with the Houston, San Francisco and Chicago symphonies. Last year, Yuja toured Leeds, U.K. and the Netherlands for the first time, performing Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic under the direction of Maestro Yuri Temirkanov. Her November 2007 performance with the Shanghai Quartet at the Modlin Center overwhelmingly won the hearts of Richmond's music lovers who immediately requested an encore engagement. Yuja graciously accepted and we're delighted to feature this promising young talent in her return to our campus.
