"[Wang] can play powerfully...or with a feathery softness; she has a whole spectrum of hues in her fingers; and she goes beyond mere dexterity in her remarkable understanding, and her ability to avoid the obvious." —The Washington Post
Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music
Although only 20 years old, Yuja Wang is already internationally celebrated for her virtuosic performances at the piano. An artist whose innate sensitivities, intuitive understanding and keyboard prowess have earned her a formidable ranking among pianists of all ages, Wang is in high demand at concert venues throughout the world. Demonstrating an affinity for the piano at a young age, the six-year-old Yuja enrolled in the Central Conservatory of Music in her birthplace of Beijing. Soon after her enrollment, she was winning competitions in China, Spain and Germany. In 2005, she made her critically-acclaimed debut with the New York Philharmonic 2005, going on to appear with the Houston, San Francisco and Chicago symphonies. Last year, Yuja toured Leeds, U.K. and the Netherlands for the first time, performing Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic under the direction of Maestro Yuri Temirkanov. Her November 2007 performance with the Shanghai Quartet at the Modlin Center overwhelmingly won the hearts of Richmond's music lovers who immediately requested an encore engagement. Yuja graciously accepted and we're delighted to feature this promising young talent in her return to our campus.

by: Samantha She could not be better. I consider her one of the most talented musicians of this age.

by: LJ Hmmm? I felt that the performance was very mechanical and played with little emotion. Of course I also did not care for the artist's preference for "banging" pieces, which made up most of the program. Someone had complained about Arlo offering a rather short program. Wow, hope they didn't come last night. Started at 7:40, was over by 8:55 with the usual intermission.

by: Nancy I felt too much technique and virtuosity (and volume) and not enough of what makes music pleasing and lovely. She seems to me to be wonderfully endowed with talent and strength, but perhaps needs some guidance on planning her programs for more balance.

by: barbara Miss Wang is mechanically very good. In time she will be more seasoned. I did not like her choice of pieces. Even though they were difficult, there was too much banging on the piano and not enough music coming from it. I would not attend another of her performances.

by: Samantha The artist is technically very proficient. She lacks the emotional component in music to a great degree. The Lizst Sonata was played perfectly and her style is suited to this piece. We left at intermission, because we both hate "noise" by Bartok. I cannot stay in the same room with it. Bad choice.

by: Paul Yuja Wang is wonderful. Her percussive quality was balanced by lovely
emotion when such was called for. A most impressive show!
