"Arlo's between-song narratives are hilarious, serpentine journeys that expose political absurdities with acute comic timing and an aw-shucks tone of self-effacement that serve as dual tributes to his father's legacy." —City Pages (Minnesota)

Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music

Born with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other, Arlo Guthrie grew up during the "Folk Boom" era in New York City, where he learned something from everyone. He developed his own style, becoming a distinctive, expressive voice in a crowded community of singer-songwriters and political-social commentators. Arlo's career exploded in 1967 with the release of Alice's Restaurant, whose title song helped foster a new commitment among the '60s generation to social consciousness and activism. In addition to his accomplishments as a musician, Arlo is a natural-born storyteller, whose tales and anecdotes figure prominently in his performances.

Tickets:
$36 adults, $34 seniors 65+, $18 children 12 and under, $28 UR employees, $8 UR students

Arlo Guthrie

I enjoyed the performance, but wish he had sung at least a part of "Alice's Restaurant". The encore "Peace" song by his father was very poignant.

Arlo was fantastic and the venue was great. He made me laugh and cry, remember days gone by and look forward to the future.

The performance was terrific in all respects but one - it was much too brief - just barely over two hours INCLUDING the intermission. I really felt short-changed.

We thoroughly enjoyed the show. We came straight from visiting a dear friend at the funeral home and Arlo Guthrie was exactly what we needed to pick us up. I would have loved to hear Alice's Restaurant but just seeing him perform The City of New Orleans was worth the price of admission for us.

Fantastic. I also would have liked to hear Alice's Restaurant but I feel it would have taken too much time from other material and it is available on CD. Let's get more of these folks. There are many traditional and contemporary folk musicians available and I feel the Modlin Center series has not included enough of this genre of music.

Really a mood elevator! He's a very accomplished musician. His stories were hilarious - the ones I could hear. There was a problem with that. He dropped his voice or drowned himself out with his guitar for some of the punchlines.

My wife started out a bit bored, but he quickly caught her interest and she enjoyed the performance. It's a sign of a good artist when he can make his audience warm to his art.

Altogether a great evening. Everyone left smiling.

The performance was thoroughly enjoyable. Guthrie is a talented musician. His stories were fun to hear - and we had relatively little trouble hearing. Some of his songs with story-type lyrics reminded me of James McMurtry (son of Larry and former English professor Jo McMurtry). It would be good to hear James in concert sometime. He performs a lot, but not often nearby. Joanne

I came not really knowing what to expect. I was a bit worried after the first song, but then he really intrigued me and kept me very entertained. I am a student here at UR and don't usually listen to this music, yet really enjoyed him. I may have even paid just to hear him talk and tell his stories. Fantastic evening altogether. "Alice's Restaurant" was great and I'm so glad that I brought my friend, who also thoroughly enjoyed it. Great job again, Modlin staff!!! I would definitely see him again if he returned.

An Instant Classic, Arlo is a troubadour of epic proportions. His music, poetry, song and story telling while entertaining is packed full of wonderful gems that sums up a generation and have timeless application. He was equally charming after the show… you all should have hung around, 15 minutes after the show he was in the lobby signing autographs and taking pictures.
I have never been disappointed with any performance at any Modlin Center event and Arlo rates a top five in my book.

Arlo was great as usual. He is a great storyteller but a much better musician.. He always brings tears and smiles and makes you think a little. You walk out of his shows with a lighter heart and renewed hope for us all.

The concert was INCREDIBLE! What a tantalizing talent Arlo Guthrie has in blending folk music, stories, jokes, and history into one captivating evening. I could have listened to him for hours!
My only thought that could have made it a more powerful experience, was to have hosted in the Greek Theatre (outdoors) where the audience could have relaxed and even danced. Don’t get me wrong, Camp Concert Hall has great acoustics, but I felt with a performer like this, he feeds off the energy of the audience - and I’m not sure many of the attendees knew much more than “Alice’s Restaurant”.
My favorite performance of the evening was "This land is our land", it is truely a timeless classic!

I've seen quite a few Arlo show's and this was up to par with all the rest. No one can tell a story better; he is a master weaver of story and song. Arlo is an artist in the most true sense of the word, a great musician and songwriter but most of all a soul of the people.

What a wonderful evening that took me back to a number of summers at Wolf Trap with Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger. He is a wonderful storyteller and entertaining and thoughtful singer. Let's have more of this genre--my wife and I heard The Smothers Brothers and The Kingston Trio together at Wolf Trap last year, and they were similarly delightful, especially Tom and Dick Smothers. Another feather in the cap for The Modlin Center and its eclectic programming. Bob

Whenever an icon performer from an earlier generation is still able to share his/her craft live on stage--those who are fortunate enough to witness such an occasion are participating in an historic event. While Arlo didn't sound quite the same last night as he did in his "Alice's Restaurant" days, just seeing and hearing the real man spin his art on stage in an energetic (and still accomplished fashion) gives us all a taste of genuine Americana folk music that uplifts the mind and enriches our spirits.

Thanks for bringing Arlo here.Concert was great. Hard to think it was 40 years since I saw him last. Unpopular war and president. Some things never change. Peter Bailey

Another winner among this year's presentations. Although I must confess to my usual lack of enthusiasm for folk music, last night's performance of music and humorous patter were very refreshing.

Arlo Guthrie is a legend in his own time and getting him to visit Richmond and perform for us was a coup. When someone like him performs, it is always too short and not enough. To me it was another great experience in the 2008 series.
