Neil Berg's 100 Years of Broadway

Posted: January 26, 2008; 16:37 by: Ben
I thought this show was wonderful. I do enjoy Broadway a lot, but am fairly young and haven't seen most of the classics. However, I thought that all of the performers did an amazing job in recreating them. They were humorous and incredibly talented. I think that I enjoyed the first half a bit more than the second, but that was just my preference. Modlin always does a great job in bringing talent to Richmond and I would definitely go again if they returned. It would be great to see them again next year. Wonderful job Modlin!

Definitely bring them back next season. The show was wonderful. Great talent all round. Thoroughly enjoyed it. (Constructive comment: seats A1 & 2 are in a terrible draught zone).

Weakest show I ever saw at the Modlin Center (and we see many). This was 30 years ago at the New York Catskills or Miami Beach. Totally disconnected... following Oklahoma was Billy Joel! You will need to fill your performances with Bus loads of very senior citizens with this kind of offerings. A wasted afternoon for us.

This concept can work...see Forbidden Broadway with only 4 performers in New York running for nearly 10 years.

This was a fantastic show! Before today, Neil Berg and the accompanying performers were not household names to me. Neil is a gifted musician, composer, and director who attacks the piano in a dynamic and animated fashion. With gusto, he flips the pages of his two-inch-thick notebook of music, to which he occasionally refers. Neil and all the performers have extensive and impressive dossiers of noted Broadway engagements. The drummer adds a new dimension to percussion with his intricate effects and precision timing. The music was what everyone knows from great Broadway shows, and it seemed that the performance was over in a flash. Neil suggested that Richmond might be an annual stop on his tours, and the audience offered a resounding yes.

This show was absolutely fantastic!! Consider the talent that was on stage-ON BROADWAY "1ST" CLASS PERFORMERS-not Off-Broadway. Modlin was extremely fortunate to have Neil Berg here. I would be very remiss if I did not say that you should have them back next year. To have this caliber of talent in such a small, cozy, very acoustical, and warming concert hall is truly a treat!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pam & Dave

Bill obviously has extremely bad taste, and, is uniformed, as well as having bad ears and eyes!! Too bad for him.

Was completely enthralled by the performances!!! I loved Neil Berg's selections, commentary and enthusiasm. I felt honored to be in the presence of such amazing artists sharing their talents. Many of the numbers brought tears to my eyes. The show provided much more entertainment than I anticipated... I feel it was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and I didn't want it to end. I would definitely hope they return in future years!

Kudos to all the performers! Another coup for Kathy Panoff and others of you who were instrumental in bringing to Richmond much needed professional entertainment.

Roger Cohen is the coolest drummer I've ever seen. This was a terrific show. Loved the variety of voices. And Neil Berg's enthusiasm at the piano. DO bring them back!

Great show! I brought my 17 year old son and he loved it. As we walked to the car, he said; "That was a beautiful evening, thank you." It's been a long time since I heard that! The show moved swiftly and smoothly, with with terrific pace and changes of pace. The musicians as well as the singers were all excellent, and the singers perfectly matched to the songs. There were so many highs to the show, it would be unjust to focus on any one. Mr. Berg has assembled a wonderful performance, immensely entertaining to everyone in the audience, old and young alike.

The entire performance was absolutely wonderful! Both the vocalists and the band were amazing and Neil Berg was a great and very entertaining host. I have seen several Broadway productions fairly recently, and the caliber of talent in this show surpassed the majority of the performers that I saw in NYC.
Not only was the cast amazing performers, but they also really love what they do and care about their audience members. For these 2 performances, they added a special song that was not in the program, Bring Him Home from Les Miserables, just because my parents who saw the show several weeks ago told them how much I loved Les Miserables, how sad I was that it just closed on Broadway, and that I would see them here in Richmond two weeks later.
This is definitely one of the best performances, with by far the best cast, that I have ever seen at the Modlin center! I would love to see them again next year!

We loved it. Great selection of songs delivered with great enthusiasm and skill. The performances were equal to or superior to what we have seen recently on Broadway or in D.C. We especially liked Raymond McLeod, and his rendition of "Ol' Man River" was the best I have heard since Robeson and Warfield. I hope you will bring them back in the future, and encourage them to add something from "Carousel" and "Camelot." Perhaps "Bill" needs to see "Grumpy Old Men." Bob & Nancy
