Modlin Center for the Arts
The full 2008-2009 season will be announced June 1—a full month earlier than normal! Stay tuned to see if we can top the past 12 seasons! And if you aren't on our mailing list, be sure to sign up today. Here's a sample of what's coming up next...
We have a spectacular roster of artists and attractions for 2008-2009, including the return of favorites MOMIX and Cirque Eloize, both with shows never before seen in Richmond. And author and humorist David Sedaris, who sold out the 3600-seat Landmark Theater in 2006, returns on the heels of the release of his new book, When You Are Engulfed in Flames.
Newcomers to the Modlin Center schedule include Garrison Keillor, who will join Robin & Linda Williams on stage, and the African Children's Choir, founded in 1984 by human rights activist Ray Barnett, and recent performers on the popular Idol Gives Back television program.
If you're "mad about trad," you won't want to miss our season opener: An Irish Homecoming. This extravaganza features some of the Celtic tradition's most sought-after musicians today. Cherish the Ladies, Maura O’Connell and others will be on hand to bring a wide smile to your lips and a lively tap to your toe! You’ll also want to mark your calendars in the spring of 2009 when the group Danú, hailing from Ireland's County Waterford, performs its fiery, no-holds-barred Celtic melodies—fiddles, tin whistles, accordions and all!
A favorite of Modlin audiences, eighth blackbird returns for two appearances next season. The Grammy Award-winning ensemble has made a name for itself with its innovative approach to contemporary repertoire, joyfully debunking the myth that understanding "modern music" is the sole province of an elite few.
Famed Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim sits down for a conversation with New York Times columnist Frank Rich during a rare stage appearance. Sondheim, the recipient of a record seven Tony Awards for musicals including A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd and Into The Woods, has been praised as "the dominant artistic force in the American musical theater" by The New York Times.
Battleworks Dance Company invites you to celebrate the joy of movement with quirky, timeless interpretations that challenge the boundaries of the traditional, soaring to uncharted realms where the previously unimagined becomes an awe-inspiring reality.
Satisfy your itch for drama, chills and thrills with a double bill from L.A. Theatre Works: War of the Worlds and The Lost World. Outer space and the inner reaches of the Amazon jungle are the extraordinary fare for the night as America's premiere radio theatre company transports you to a region of fantasy, fright and sheer fun.
Feeling global? Join us when Thomas Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited visit our stage with their soul-inspiring, joyful and rhythmic chimurenga music. Mapfumo's songs calling for revolution and resistance contributed to the fall of Rhodesia's white-minority rule. In the new nation of Zimbabwe, hope soon turned to despair with Mugabe's rise to power. Mapfumo, whose songs are banned on Zimbabwean state radio, is now living in exile while continuing to urge radical change through his music.
The complete season will be announced in June and subscription orders will be accepted beginning June 2 when the box office reopens for the summer. With nearly half of our performances selling out last season, you don't want to miss this opportunity to subscribe and guarantee your place in our audience.
