The University of Richmond's resident Indonesian orchestra, Gamelan Raga Kusuma, trades sets with Brazilian capoiera musicians led by Mestre Panao and Kevin Harding's bossa ensemble.
Gamelan Raga Kusuma was founded in February 2007 and is made up of a diverse group of students and community members. The orchestra was hand-forged over six months by Bali's foremost gongsmith in 2005. During the fall 2007 semester, with support from the University of Richmond Office of International Education, the group was directed by visiting master artist Gusti Putu Sudarta, who sanctified and named the ensemble.
