About Us

Opened in October 1996, the Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond features state-of-the-art performance venues, galleries, studios and classrooms. Called "a work of art itself" by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the $22.5 million, 165,000 square foot facility is highly distinctive and full of interesting details. Built in the Collegiate Gothic style, the Modlin Center is home to the departments of music, art and art history, and theatre and dance—all under one roof.

The Camp Concert Hall is a 600-seat facility devoted to the performance of music. It features a permanent shell designed to maximize the concert experience for both audience members and musicians.

The Alice Jepson Theatre is a flexible 550-seat main stage theatre. The size and design provides for every audience member a dazzling, intimate view, as well as creating a beautiful setting with tall mahogany windows, arched openings and elegant stairways.

During our current season, which runs through April 2006, the Modlin Center will present more than 35 world-class performing arts events as part of the Modlin Great Performances Series, four main-stage productions presented by the University Players and University Dancers, and another 23 music performances as part of the Department of Music's annual FREE concert series. In addition, the Harnett Museum of Art and the Harnett Print Study Center, both part of University Museums, will present 12 major exhibitions. The Modlin Center also presents a summer arts series in June featuring music and theatre productions.

Many of the events presented at the Modlin Center feature an academic component designed specifically for Richmond students. These activities, all of which are free and open to the public, include master classes and lecture demonstrations, as well as pre-concert and pre-exhibition lectures.
